The NFL in the Moment Week 5 2015

Week Five kicks off the second quarter of the season (for every team except Tennessee and New England coming into it off of their Bye Weeks) where typically playoff teams start to exercise their dominance has usually been good to us. Quite often, the teams we liked Week Three that found a way to lose have turned it around in Week Four and paid a better price because of it.

Thursday Night Football
2/1 Indianapolis Colts +5.0   @   5/12 Houston Texans -5.0   O/U   41.0
The Colts visit the Texans sitting alone atop the AFC South at 2-2 however if Jacksonville had a proper placekicker or Tennessee a proper coach they would be 0-4. The Texans meanwhile actually are 0-3 having beaten only the lowly Tampa Bay Bucs. Andrew Luck is expected to play for the Colts while Mallett will start for the Texans. Bet the team that is not favored if you must but pass on the game if you can as anything could happen in this game.
Selection:  None

Sunday's Games

7/5 Seattle Seahawks +3.0   @   5/8 Cincinnati Bengals -3.0   O/U   43.0
The Seattle Seahawks would be 1-3 if the officials would have done their Job in the Lions game. Russell Wilson is not a very good quarterback while the Bengals have a much better defense than the Lions. Hard to see any way Seattle wins this one.
Selection: Cincinnati @ 5/8 for 8 Units/Cincinnati -3.0 for 8 Units/16

7/2 St. Louis Rams +9.0   @   1/5 Green Bay Packers -9.0   O/U   46.0
The Green Bay Packers look all but unbeatable this season, especially at home, however only the 2007 Patriots have gotten through a 16 game regular season without losing at least one game. The St. Louis Rams meet the fourth playoff team from last year in five weeks in Green Bay and are 2-1 against them so far (they also lost to the Redskins somehow). If any pass rush is going to rattle Rodgers it will be this one. After winning for us at 5/2 last week we’re taking the Rams again
Selection: St. Louis @ 7/2 for 5 units/ 7/2 St. Louis +9.0 for 5 units/10

6/4 Jacksonville Jaguars +3.0   @   10/17 Tampa Bay Buccaneers -3.0   O/U   42.5
It is hard to tell how the young Jaguars are going to respond after the kicker cost them a road win in Indy and a share of first place. Tampa meanwhile doesn’t seem to have the horses to attack, Winston is too erratic, or defend and will be picking high again next year. If you bet Jacksonville last week, and we did, you have to give them a chance to redeem themselves (although they did not sign a new kicker this week) when they are at-odds against a team like Tampa.
Selection:  Jacksonville @ 6/4 for 10 units/Jacksonville +3.0 for 10 units/20

5/2 Cleveland Browns +6.5   @   1/3 Baltimore Ravens -6.5   O/U   43.5
The basement dwellers of the AFC North meet in Baltimore where Joe Flacco’s only weapon (Steve Smith) broke parts of his back and is unlikely to be back. The Browns meanwhile lost a tough one in San Diego last week. This is the year of the injury in Baltimore and it is easy to picture Cleveland winning a rare road game.
Selection: Cleveland @ 5/2 for 2 Units/ Cleveland +6.5 for 2 Units/16

13/5 Washington Redskins +7.0   @   5/16 Atlanta Falcons -7.0   O/U   48.0
Washington is coming off of a win over the Eagles while the Falcons are 4-0 coming off wins over Dallas (Brandon Weeden version) and the Texans. All of which tells us exactly nothing. The Falcons certainly have the most polished offence but are they for real on defence or is Dan Quinn using gimmicks that can be seen through? Three (3) of the Falcons four (4) wins have come against the NFC East as they attempt to sweep the division in this one. The Redskin defence has been giving up fewer points but did give up 32 to the Giants. If you, like us, question the quality of Atlanta and believe that Kirk Cousins has a future as an NFL Quarterback then at these odds the Redskins are worth a small wager.
Selection:   Washington @ 13/5 for 2 Units/Washington +7.0 for 2 Units/4

13/4 Chicago Bears +9.0   @   2/9 Kansas City Chiefs -9.0   O/U   45.5
Just when you thought the Bears were going into hibernation Cutler (surprisingly) makes the start and beats the Raiders. Kansas City meanwhile is also 1-3 but because the losses have come against Green Bay, Denver and Cincinnati everyone is giving them the benefit of the doubt. Although we don't normally recommend betting on Jay Cutler, Alex Smith is too predictable and John Fox is a heck of a defensive mind. Don’t know that the Bears can win in KC but they should cover.
Selection:  Chicago Bears +9.0 for 3 units/3

1/4 New England Patriots -8.5   @   3/1 Dallas Cowboys +8.5   O/U   49.5
Although 1/4 is too short of a price to take it sure is tempting. The Patriots are operating at an incredibly high level for a team with new personnel at RB, OLine, WR, DLine and where Devon McCourty is the only person playing the same role he did last year in the secondary. It is highly unlikely that Brandon Weeden will have much success against New England’s ball hawk DB’s whereas Brady will dice and slice the Cowboys defence and have the ball out of his hands before Greg Hardy can get anywhere near close
Selection:  New England Patriots -8.5 for 8 units/8

5/11 Denver Broncos -4.5   @   9/5 Oakland Raiders +4.5   O/U   43.5
The betting so far this week has the price on the Raiders dropping and the spread down one. The question here is whether the Raiders young offence can do anything against Denver’s solid cast of veterans when the season is still young and they aren’t too badly injured. This could be a very low scoring affair so the bet here is take the Under
Selection: Under 43.5 points for 8 units

9/5 New Orleans Saints +5   @   5/11 Philadelphia Eagles -5   O/U   49.0
New Orleans played well against a decent Cowboy line-up despite the injuries to Romo and Bryant as Brandon Weeden even drove (for the first time since Cleveland and perhaps ever) the field for a fourth quarter score. The Eagles meanwhile have been inconsistent if not incomprehensible. There is no way to bet Philadelphia at those odds while betting on a Rob Ryan run defence is never a good idea.
Selection:  None

10/17 Buffalo Bills -3.0   @   6/4 Tennessee Titans +3.0   O/U   42.5
The Bills continue to get bet and continue to burn up that money. Car Part could not get anything going against the Giants last week at the Ralph but is expect to outgun New Kid Marcus in Nashville. Although we cannot recommend betting on a Ken Wisenhunt coached team the Titans would be the play if we did.
Selection:  None

20/29 Arizona Cardinals -2.5   @   5/4 Detroit Lions +2.5   O/U   45.0
Detroit did enough to beat the Seahawks last week yet sit at 0-4 while Arizona lost at home to the giant killer St. Louis Rams after beating up on teams that started off the season very poorly. The game may come down to whether Detroit’s injured defenders (Haloti Ngata and Co.) play or stay away. Too tough to call.
Selection:  None

Sunday Night Football
12/5 San Francisco 49ers +7.0   @   5/14 New York Giants -7.0   O/U   43.0
The San Francisco team has not looked very good for three straight weeks while the Giants may be getting over bet because of their win over the Buffalo Bills. This is not a good game to bet.
Selection:  None

Monday Night Football

6/4 Pittsburgh Steelers +3.0   @   10/17 San Diego Chargers -3.0   O/U   44.5
Michael Vick played well enough in his first start to beat the Ravens but got killed by the place kicker (who is now out of the league) while Rivers unleashed a furious drive to overcome the Browns last week at home. It doesn’t get any easier for the Steelers with ARI, KC and CIN coming up so they have to win this one to try and not lose any more ground on the Bengals then a gain the same could said about the Chargers staying with Denver. Two good teams hence the three point spread so take the odds and the points in what should be a fun games to watch.

Selection:  Pittsburgh @ 6/4 for 8 units/Pittsburgh -8.5 for 8 units/16

The NFL in the moment - Week Two 2015

NFLWeek Two 2015

The market has spoken and here is what it has said:

1/1 New England Patriots +1.5    vs   5/6 Buffalo Bills -1.   O/U 45
The Patriots opened as 5/6 favorites (-1 ) however consistent pressure out of Western New York has pushed the spread almost a full field goal (2.5) the other way. Tom Brady has been involved in 26 games against Buffalo with New England winning 23 and losing 3: Week 17 last season (while the Patriots rested their starters for their 2014 Super Bowl Run), a 31-0 aberration opening day (Week One) 2003 (where Brady threw 4 Picks and no TD's which spurred the Patriots on to a 17-1 record the rest of the season culminating in the 2003 Super Bowl) and without much attached drama on another 4 Interception day from Brady Week Three 2011. Any team can win any game on any given day and if Brady throws 4 interceptions today the Patriots will likely lose as Brady has lost all 6 (of 210) of his regular season 4 interception games. A shift of 2 1/2 points in a game expected to be as close as this one is massive. Mobile quarterbacks, going back to Miami unleashing the Wildcat of the modern day NFL against New England in 2008, have given the Patriots trouble in the past however Belichick has adjusted to them pretty well over the years. New England does tend to lose more in September than in the later months but all of these things are looking for the exception. With the points, the Patriots make more sense than ever

Selection: New England Patriots @ 1/1 for 5 units/New England Patriots +1.5  for 5 units – 10 (16)

11/5 San Francisco 49ers +6   vs   5/13 Pittsburgh Steelers -6  O/U 45.5
The 49ers drop yet again this week, down to 5 1/2 points. Their defence sure looked good bottling up Peterson and with Levion Bell out in Steeltown we expect that San Francisco can keep the score down so 5 1/2 is still a pretty big number for them. We are sticking with the earlier wager at +6.
Selection: San Francisco 49ers @ 11/5 for 2 units / San Francisco 49ers +6 @ 10/11 for 2 units -4 (40)

The NFL in this moment - Week Two 2015

NFL 2015 Week Two

Thursday Night Football
6/4 Denver Broncos +3   vs   10/17 Kansas City Chiefs -3   O/U 42.5
Is it not a bit early to be writing off the 6/4 Denver Broncos? They did win last week after all and their pass rush certainly looked ferocious in beating down the Ravens, a team likely a cut above the Texans squad that KC beat. It is hard to imagine Alex Smith faring much better this week than Flacco did last week whereas Peyton Manning is lifetime 13-1 against the Chiefs
Selection: Denver Broncos @ 6/4 for 3 units/Denver Broncos +3 @ 10/11 for 3 units - 6

Selection: New England Patriots @ 1/1 for 5 units/New England Patriots +1.5  for 5 units – 10 (16)

17/10 Seattle Seahawks +3.5   vs   1/2 Green Bay Packers -3.5   O/U 49
It is way too much to expect the Seahawks to repeat the aberration that was last week (against the Rams) especially against a team they match up so well against. The Packers simply cannot stop the run and now that Marshawn Lynch has knocked off the offseason rust he should be primed to run it down Green Bay’s throat all night long. There is no denying that Russell Wilson is a significant liability capable of gift-wrapping the game for the Packers however look for Seattle’s defence to emphatically show that last week’s debacle was assuredly a one-off and that they can get along quite well thank you very much while Kam Chancellor watches the game at home on television instead of getting paid roughly $336,375.00 to honor his contract. Having written all that we suggest that you do not bet this one with both hands as Aaron Rodgers can win any game at any given time, especially at home where he almost never tosses a pick and almost never loses. Best to just take the points and hope that Wilson doesn’t literally throw the game away.
Selection: Seattle Seahawks +3.5 @ 10/11 for 2 units – 2 (14)

29/20 Houston Texans +3   vs   20/33 Carolina Panthers -3    O/U 39.5
The big question here is whether Ryan Mallett’s garbage time stats will translate into production while the outcome of the game is yet to be determined. Carolina’s win over Jacksonville really doesn’t tell us anything as Newton’s 71.3 passer rating was good enough to get the job done but hardly impressive. With Arian Foster expected to return and give Houston’s offence a much-needed shot-in-the-arm and the Texans getting 3 points we are going to shade that way and take the points.
Selection: Houston Texans +3 @ 10/11 for 1 unit – 1 (15)

4/7 St. Louis Rams -3.5   vs   31/20 Washington Redskins + 3.5 O/U 41
Things have never seemed to go Washington’s way since Dan “I Am A Clown” Snyder bought the team around the turn of the century meanwhile the St. Louis Rams have been chronic under-achievers since Jeff Fisher took over the Head Coach position 4 years ago. With the Redskins at home and getting points it would seem skilful to takes them however we are going to pass
Selection: None

2/5 Miami Dolphins -6   vs 21/10 Jacksonville Jaguars +6   O/U 41.5
The Dolphins will most probably win this one and cover the six points. They may even score 42 points all on their own however after l;ast week’s power shortage against the sad sack Redskins where they failed to score an offensive TD they are as equally difficult to back as the two steps forward, two steps back Jaguars. Pass.
Selection: None

5/6 Tennessee Titans -1 vs Evens Cleveland Browns +1   O/U 41.5
It is hard to tell what the Cleveland Browns are trying to achieve this season (for example, are they gunning for first overall draft pick?) while, on the surface, the Titans appear to have reinvented themselves as a contender albeit after a single game into the Mark Us Marry Oughta era down there in Nashville. The Titans favored on the road? Who would have thunk it?. Not us. We are not believers in Ken Wisenhunt hence we shall wait and see.
Selection: None

6/5 Atlanta Falcons +2.5 vs 5/7 New York Giants -2.5   O/U 51.5
Given the odds on the game, it appears that the general sentiment is that more people were impressed by the way the Giants almost won against the Cowboys than believe that the Atlanta renaissance, led by Dan Quinn and actual winners Week 1 over Chip Kelly’s revamped Eagles. It seems that most people believe that the Cowboys, sans Demarco Murray, are still the top dog in the NFC East and the Eagles are not for real. We do not agree. The Eagles were a missed 44 yard field goal away from beating the Falcons and will, in time, pull away from the rest of the division. It was hard to believe how fast the Falcon’s defence got so bad under Mike Smith however given the very often under estimated effect of very good coaching, a la Bill Belichick for example, the Atlanta defence merely required to be properly coached. Players like Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski may appear to dominate the competition however without the tremendous jobs coaching by the New England staff, they would be pretty much hit and miss like everyone else instead of in the thick of it every single year (the Patriots have played in the AFC Championship the past 4 years in a row). It is our belief that Atlanta should be favored in this game hence receiving the 2.5 points is a huge gift. Look for the Falcons to re-assert themselves as the NFC South Champions under Dan Quinn this season (they are now favored but you can still get 8/5 on them to do so) and more down the line. It is in games like these that the ability to see things as they truly are, beyond the hype, can pay huge dividends over an extended time period.
Selection: Atlanta Falcons +2.5 @ 10/11 for 5 units – 5 (20)

6/5 Detroit Lions +2.5   vs   5/7 Minnesota Vikings -2.5 O/U 43
The last time the Vikings beat the Lions (12/29/2013) Matt Cassel was the QB. If you look back at our earlier blogs, you will find that we have never been impressed in the least by Teddy Bridgewater and his wobbly balls. In fact, Teddy has yet to beat a team with a winning record. Of course, we have never been impressed by Matt Stafford either and cannot understand his pay grade whatsoever (although he has slipped to 15th overall in the third year of his current contract while contracts have spiralled upwards the past two years with the significant salary cap increases). In any case, the Lions are a legitimate play-off contender in the weaker NFC, who just lost a tough one to the very good, and very tenacious, Phillip Rivers led San Diego Chargers whereas the Vikings are not much of anything. Zimmer is a pretty good coach who can come up with schemes to beat the lesser teams but doesn’t have the horses to win on a consistent basis. He should have hung onto Matt Cassel as when Bridgewater bombs out, and he will bomb out, Zimmer no longer has a viable Plan “B”.
Selection: Detroit Lions @ 6/5 for 3 units/Detroit Lions +2.5 @ 10/11 for 3 units – 6 (26)

4/5 Arizona Cardinals -2   vs 21/20 Chicago Bears +2 O/U 46
We took intially were lulled into a false sense of security surrounding this game by Arizona's 10 wins seasons (and Chicago's lack thereof), the Cardinal's relatively easy Week One win, Cutler's patented 4th quarter interception to Clay Matthews that we failed to see where Fox Really has made a difference. Last year the Packers dominated the Bears in both games (they won the "close" one by 20) whereas Chicago was driving down one score with under 4 minutes left when Matthews picked-off Cutler and when they got the ball back they did score and get the on-side kick off. Meanwhile Carson Palmer was moving with the grace and dexterity of Frankenstein, had more trouble moving the ball than New Orleans against a Saints squad with no defence and the worst DC in football. The game is in Chicago, the Bears are getting points and Cutler normally play his best early in the season.
Selection:  Chicago Bears +2 for 2 units and Over 46 for 2 units – 6 (32)

7/2 Tampa Bay Bucs +10   vs   1/5 New Orleans Saints -10   O/U 47
Already the huge odds/spreads on Tampa Bay and it is only Week 2!!! Will Winston win a game this year? Will he ever? 1/5 is simply too short of a price however 140 points doesn’t look like so much after Tampa’s 28 point deficit last week against the “other” rookie QB Mark Us Marry Oughta. Nah.
Selection: None

29/20 San Diego Chargers +3   vs   20/33 Cincinnati Bengals -3 O/U 47
It is interesting sometimes to note how short the public’s memory can become on a consistent basis with regards to certain players and teams, case in point Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals, perhaps the perfect model to define inconsistency. Last season the Bengals were humiliated by the Browns in Week 10 in a game where Dalton’s passer rating was 2 however the very next week they went down to New Orleans and whupped the Saints with Andy putting up a passer rating of 143.9 and went on to make yet another one-and-done post season appearance. It is hard to know but the odds on this game may also be affected by the perceived bias that West Coast teams travelling to the East for what amounts to 10am starts as per their “body clocks” tend to not fare so well. While that may be statistically true, it doesn’t seem to affect San Diego who last year posted road victories in Buffalo and Baltimore. The final factor we considered for this game was the Bengals inconsistency versus the Chargers tendency to bunch together wins (and losses) with Rivers under center. In 2013 San Diego won 5 in a row including a post season win before bowing out in the Divisional Round while last season they won 5 straight and 3 straight (out of their 9 wins) and this year they are coming off a ferocious comeback to beat a pretty good Detroit squad. We will ride with the Chargers until they stop winning
Selection: San Diego Chargers @ 29/20 for 2 units /San Diego Chargers +3 @ 10/11 for 2 units – 4 (36)

11/5 San Francisco 49ers +6   vs   5/13 Pittsburgh Steelers -6  O/U 45.5
We do not like games like this where a team like San Fran is coming off of a convincing win, albeit over Teddy Wobbly Balls, while the Steelers were well beaten by a Patriots team far from playing their “A” game (although Brady was on fire and completed 19 consecutive passes at one point). It looks to good to be true (so it probably is) nevertheless we have to go with San Fran for a double.
Selection: San Francisco 49ers @ 11/5 for 2 units / San Francisco 49ers +6 @ 10/11 for 2 units -4 (40)

5/14 Baltimore Ravens -6.5   vs   12/5 Oakland Raiders +6.5   O/U 43
Denver simply shut down Flacco and the entire Raven offence in Week 1 and the word is that the Oakland pass rush is maybe even more intense. Problem with Raiders is Carr. Ravens loss of Suggs will prove devastating.
Selection:  Oakland Raiders @ 12/5 for 3 units/Oakland Raiders +6.5 for 3 units

9/5 Dallas Cowboys +5   vs   5/11 Philadelphia Eagles -5   O/U 55
It is too hard to go against Chip Kelly until we see what he has and yet 5/11 is too short a price to go after. Best to Watch and Learn.
Selection: None

Monday Night Football
13/5 New York Jets +7   vs   5/16 Indianapolis Colts -7   O/U 46.5
The Colts cannot stop the run and don’t have the right chemistry. The Jets have the secondary to shut down Luck, the front seven to negate Gore and their own running game to stuff Indy.
Selection: New York Jets @ 13/5 for 3 units/New York Jets +7 @ 10/11 for 3 units – 6 (46)

NFL 2015 Projections

AFC 2015

The AFC has held the balance of power for a few years now and seems to be far more up-for-grabs than the NFC.

AFC East

While all four teams in the AFC East attempted to improve this offseason, it remains to be seen if any of them actually did. Miami made the biggest splash signing ”Donkey Kong” Suh however we expect them to have made the smallest improvement, if any. Watching the Patriots/Lions game last fall it was readily apparent that, with adequate game-planning, Suh could be rendered a non-factor fairly easily. In that game, Brady did not get sacked but Stafford did twice, Blount averaged 6 yards per carry and apart from a mental blank spot where Brady through a pass right to Lion defender James Ihedigbo after driving the ball 70 yards down the field to the Lion’s 10 following the second half kickoff, Detroit’s up to then highly vaunted defence was systematically shredded by New England all afternoon. No doubt Suh and WR Greg Jennings represent very nice acquisitions however after losing Odrick, Clay and Hartline et al it is hard to say that Miami is significantly better.

Over in Gotham City, the Jets spent a ton of money bringing back Revis and Cro’ and definitely upgraded at head coach after sending the bombastic Rex Ryan shuffling off to Buffalo and bringing in first year but well thought of new Head Coach Todd Bowles. They also acquired Brandon Marshall to play top dog to Eric Decker’s outlet/third down chain mover specialties and drafted Devin Smith to fill out their WR corps, joining newcomers to the backfield Stevan “I can’t feel my hands” Ridley and Zac Stacy. Add in draft coup-de-grace Leonard Williams to an already stout front seven  and you get a very solid, all around team except for at the most important position where Geno “Don’t you know who I am” Smith managed to get his jaw broken by someone who obviously didn’t. It will be another long year in the Big Apple with Ryan Fitzpatrick under center however if he gets hurt perhaps Todd Bowles too will get Case Keenum out of a tree and put him under center if Billy O’B in Houston is willing to give him Keenum’s number (presumably he gets enough bars of reception in the forest).

Speaking of shuffling off to Buffalo, Shady McCoy followed Yogi Bear (doesn’t Rex look exactly like the cartoon character except not quite as clever?) after Chip Kelly tired of Lesean’s song-and-dance routine. McCoy joins Charles Clay and Percy Harvin who headed north and west to keep incumbent Sammy Watkins company at WR. All four of them were expected to catch passes from perennially underrated Matt Cassel until Rex thought (he shouldn’t do that as he is not very good at it) Tyrod should be a starter in the NFL instead of part of your car’s undercarriage. McCoy cost Rex his best linebacker (Kiko Alonzo who tore Brian Hoyer’s ACL while he was sliding on MNF in 2013) nevertheless the Bill’s front seven remains stout and despite being thin the entire Bill’s defence is very strong except at safety.

Bills new GM Doug Whaley went out and got Ryan a solid if unspectacular NFL Starting QB in Matt Cassel to direct a well put together offence and with one impulsive, patented Rex Ryan type move the entire Bills season went down the chute. By committing to Car Part, Ryan pretty much has to let him start the first three games (home to Indianapolis and New England then at Miami) and it is hard to see the Bills winning any of those games with Taylor. At that point, with the Giants coming to town Taylor will get one more chance. The worst thing that can happen to the Bills, hence the most likely outcome, is that they win. When they do, they will have a home date with the Bengals between games at Tennessee and at Jacksonville. Going into their bye Week 8, they will most probably be 3-4 coming off a win. If they beat Miami to go to 4-4 everyone will be talking about the post season again however they will lose four or five games of their next five to be either at 4-9 or 5-8 come Week 15 when it won’t matter much one way or the other what happens when they play the Redskins.

The New England Patriots have won the AFC East every season that Tom Brady has started at least two games since Brady lost 2 of his last 3 starts in 2002. Perhaps more impressive, likely unprecedented and even more unlikely to ever be surpassed is the fact that in every season beginning the year Brady beat Manning in his first ever start on September 30th, 2001, no team in the AFC East has finished with a better Won/Lost record than New England. Although the Patriots missed out on the 2002 (Jets) and 2008 (Dolphins) AFC East titles, they lost both of those years on tie-breakers. To give that span some context, the Jets will be starting the year with their seventh QB and fourth Head Coach since then, the Bills on their sixth HC and eighth QB and the Dolphins on their sixth HC and ninth QB. The surprising thing here is that the Patriots have achieved all of this success while in the main missing with their positional overhauls. This year is no different. Malcolm Butler takes over as CB1 while CB’s 2 & 3 remain to be seen but apart from that New England may have the finest three starting linebackers in the league and starting free safety.

Strong safety is again up for grabs but solidity on the defensive line may be in sight if first rounders Brown and Easley work out. With Sheard and Jones on the ends Ninkovich could see time back at his natural OLB position with a plethora of young blood fighting for the rotational snaps. Youth also is expected to dominate on the interior offensive line where Solder and Volmer are expected to play at near All Pro caliber. Rocket scientist Cameron Fleming may have figured out how to play tackle at the NFL level by now and Chandler will compliment Gronk & Hooman at TE rather nicely. Blount remains fresh at HB where he still has only carried the ball 700 times (by contrast Demarco Murray had 400 carries last year alone) and Brady is still Brady. This year seems to be opening up for Aaron Dobson as the outside WR blazer with Reggie Wayne coming in to compliment Edelman, Amendola and LaFell. Solid from top-to-bottom with plenty of depth, excellent coaching and even better situational planning, New England is once again primed to be in contention for the championship yet again. One thing the impending possible suspension of Brady has shown us is that the Patriots can withstand a major setback, even at quarterback, and still remain in contention.

Winner: New England Patriots at 4/9
Other Play-off Contenders: None

AFC North

Watching Tyrod Taylor rip through the Steelers defence during Preseason Week 3 is became apparent as to why Dick Lebeau left town. This is not your father’s Steel Curtain. Pittsburgh’s offence is primed to be one of the league’s highest scoring units which it better had be because it certainly looks as though they are going to be giving up boatloads of points. It is interesting that the Steelers will be missing key players to kick-off the season for smoking pot. The team’s trainers  can distribute oxy’s on the plane home like they are giving out candy but let a guy smoke a joint, which is actually legal in some States (whereas handing out prescription painkillers most assuredly is not), and he can sit at home and forfeit up to $4 million. Only in America. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger, who has learned to satisfy his penchant for extremely young women the old-fashioned way by paying for it, continues to excel at quarterback and his cast of characters is pretty impressive.

The AFC North gets both the NFC and AFC West this year and it will be interesting to watch the Steelers go up against the so-called top defences of the NFC West. When it is a toss-up between a 35 year old Carson Palmer (at least until he gets hurt) and Nick Foles as to who is the biggest offensive threat, less than stellar defences don’t have a lot to fear. Pittsburgh gets penalized for winning the division last year by having to go on the road to New England but at least that is early in the season whilst Belichick is still tinkering to see what he has. In addition, they have to go to Seattle during the rainy season. The Ravens on the other hand get Seattle at home in December and get to go to Miami in December as well. Are the Steelers that much better than the Ravens? No, but the Ravens have to go to Denver Week 1, before Manning has any wear and tear on him while Pittsburgh gets him at home in late December. It could very well come down to the Week 16 match-up in Baltimore.

The favored Ravens (at 6/4) meanwhile bid a fond, or not so fond, farewell to the Car Part, in favor of signing Matt Schuab as Flacco’s back-up for more money. Ozzy Newsome, a very shrewd talent evaluator, had Tyrod in his system for four years, and if he decided he was better off with Matt Schaub a prudent man would be better of going along with Ozzy than with Rex Ryan. One might also assume that given the fact that Newsome was happy to let Ngata walk that he has a younger, better version on hand to replace him. The Ravens have not lost more games than they have won since they threw Brian Billick over the side and if you have read any of his pieces on nfl.com you will understand why: The man is a terrible talent evaluator. He loves the Car Part. As mentioned above, Baltimore has both advantages and disadvantages thanks to the scheduler. Their defence will be a year older and a year better since moving on from Ed Reed and Ray Lewis and their offence will be about the same. This team was the closest one to beating New England in the post season last year based on merit (as opposed to dumb luck) and could be heard from if they make the play-offs.

Cincinnati seems to be going nowhere fast. They won’t get any better so long as they stick with Andy Dalton. Their defence seems to be losing the war of attrition and they seem to have gotten the worst from the scheduler. The Bengals will miss the play-offs this year which perhaps will shake things up. It is hard to imagine the Bengals making any great strides under Marvin Lewis and when he goes Belichick will be the longest tenured coach by a very long way. In Cleveland, Josh McCown replaces Brian Hoyer as Johnny Football’s place holder. The Browns schedule builds in degree of difficulty as the season progresses – It isn’t going to be pretty.

Winner: Pittsburgh Steelers 2/1
Other Play-off Contenders: Baltimore Ravens – No Line for Wild Card

AFC South

A lot of people are pretty excited about the Indianapolis Colts in general and Andrew Luck specifically. We are not among them. The Colts schedule just seems to get easier and easier, no doubt due in no small part to the fact that they get four gimmie wins against Tennessee and Jacksonville. This year they also get Tampa Bay and with Atlanta in transition, Carolina stuck at mediocre and New Orleans being without a defence that could turn into 8 wins without breaking a sweat. In addition, they get both Denver and New England at home. Houston however has the very same schedule and gets Kansas City instead of Denver so it will likely come down to the head-to-head match-ups. Whoever doesn’t win the division will get a wild card.

Winner: Houston Texans at 9/2

AFC West

We have seen well respected reporters and prognosticators making a believable case for Kansas City, San Diego and Denver winning the division. Most predict a marked improvement for the Oakland Raiders but none can see the Raiders coming out on top. We however can see how the Raiders might win the AFC West title if a great many things go exactly their way. First and foremost, the Raider offence must improve dramatically, starting with the running game. If Latavius Murray can run behind Oakland’s very good left side of their offensive line he may well top individually last year’s collective 1,240 yards (worst in the league). Next, Amari Cooper needs to deliver, and in a big way, right from Week 1. Oakland passed on Leonard Williams, the best player in the draft who was also in a position of need. In order for Cooper to deliver, Derek Carr must make a significant leap forward in his second year as a pro. New Head Coach Jack Del Rio is going to have to improve last season’s points per game allowed (again worst in the league) at over 28 points by at least 7 points to move them into the middle of the pack.

So assuming Carr passes for around 4,000 yards, the Raiders rush for 1,800 yards and score another 7 points a game while giving up 7 points less per game they will give themselves a chance. None of these goals are particularly farfetched when you consider that the Texans scored that many points with Ryan Fitzpatrick under center, the Washington Redskins less-than-stellar triumvirate of Booby Griffin, Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy passed for over 4,000 yards, the Minnesota Vikings without Adrian Peterson topped 1,800 yards rushing while keeping opponents scoring down in the 21 point range in Don Zimmer’s first year, down from 30 points per game the previous season. What then must also happen for the Raiders to win the division?

In Denver, not much. It will be very surprising if Peyton Manning finishes the season under center. The tandem of Kubiak and Phillips, last seen guiding a fairly talented Houston Texans squad to a league worst 2-14 record, have been brought in by Elway to replace a very good Head Coach in John Fox whom the Chicago Bears scooped up immediately. Their scheme is far better suited to Brock Osweiler who looked extremely good running it. Look for him to replace Manning as he starts to wilt with the colder weather however in the end the poor coaching will keep the Broncos out of the post season. In Kansas City, there is big excitement surrounding the acquisition of Maclin but the Chiefs have done nothing to shore up a weak offensive line and Alex Smith is a mediocre quarterback. If teams can slow up Jamaal Charles and take away Maclin KC will again have trouble scoring points. In San Diego, defence is once again their Achilles heel and an injury to one of their three or four standouts on defence could spell big trouble.

Will all of these things come to pass? Not likely. Denver does indeed seem doomed and Kansas City is unlikely to score enough but San Diego will in all likelihood take the crown at 10/3 which is a pretty nice price. Kind of hard not to put a few dollars on the Raiders at 25/1.

Winner: San Diego Chargers at 10/3
Long Shot Play-off Contenders: Oakland Raiders at 25/1

NFC 2015

The NFC seems to be far more predictable than the AFC with one dominant team per division except in the NFC West.

NFC East

There are too many things wrong with the NY Giants for them to get into play-off contention. The Washington Redskins are still neck and neck with Tampa, Tennessee and Jacksonville for the worst team in the league and Dallas, back on their way to 8-8, already has Dez Bryant hurting is going to miss Demarco Murray a lot more than they realize, who just happens to have moved over to Philadelphia. The Eagles could be the highest scoring team and the league with a very decent defence. The Eagles will run away with the division and perhaps the conference.

Winner: Philadelphia Eagles at 6/5
Other Play-off Contenders: None

NFC North

It is going to take John Fox more than a year to turn the Bears around as he first needs to jettison Jay Cutler. The Lions lost Suh and Fairley, Matt Stafford is as erratic as ever and Calvin Johnson is getting old. Minnesota did not beat a team with a winning record last season despite their seeming improvement and is going nowhere with Bridgewater although Peterson is back and combined with Zimmer’s defence should get a wild card. The Packers would win this thing with Matt Flynn under center but instead they have Aaron Rodgers who more than makes up for the incredibly poor coaching.

Winner: Green Bay Packers at 4/11
Other Play-off Contenders: Minnesota Vikings – No Line for Wild Card

NFC South

Does anyone even care? Unless the winner meets a team in the post season with no quarterback there will doubtless be one-and-done. The Panthers seem to have lost ground on offence and defence and have already lost their top wide receiver. Dan Quinn in Atlanta reminds us of Gandalf the Grey backed up against the Misty Mountains exhorting “I cannot burn snow” (Quinn needs more than he has to build a viable defence). New Orleans is trying to turn into a power running team however with Rob Ryan still mangling the defence they are hard to take seriously although swapping diva Graham for center Max Unger was a great move. Tampa just seems to be going from bad to worse each season and Winston will prove to be an unmitigated disaster.

Winner: Atlanta Falcons at 15/8
Other Play-off Contenders: None

NFC West

What can you say about a division in which the most effective quarterback is a 35 year old Carson Palmer? Jeff Fisher is a terrible coach and trading Bradford for Foles was downright dumb. Expect the Rams to again underachieve. The mass exodus from the 49ers plus throwaway coach Jim Tomsula could find San Francisco back in last place. Seattle is falling apart at the seams and way overpaid for Russell Wilson however inertia should carry them to a wild card. The Arizona Cardinals can win the division if Palmer can get through the season and pick up a wild card if he can’t.

Winner: Arizona Cardinals at 4/11
Other Play-off Contenders: Seattle Seahawks – No Line for Wild Card
