Cleveland dispatched Cincinnati 17-6 with relative ease as Brain Hoyer went to 2-0 as the starter achieving a 103.9 passer rating surpassing all but one recorded by former starter Weeden's ratings in his 17 starts. The Browns defense held the preseason favored Bengals to a mere field goal each half giving Brady's former understudy excellent support. At almost 2-1 this week the Cleveland Browns were great as our WOOF WOOF GO of the week.

Secondary Selection(s)

2) 09/29/13 - (20/29) Seattle (-3.0) AT (5/4) Houston (+3.0)
Selection:  (5/4) Houston Texans (+3.0)
Winner:  (20/29) Seattle Seahawks (-3.0) by 3

Matt Schaub, generally known for his late season and playoff collapses, had the Seahawks down 20-6 in the 4th quarter however Schaub managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory throwing a 58 yard pick 6 right to Richard Sherman on 3rd and 4 with 2:47 left. IN THE GAME. Schaub had pressure right in his face from a linebacker on a blitz and should have thrown the ball away. Instead he threw the game away. Interestingly Schaub is not trusted to call or even change a play. He was ineffective in overtime as well, unable on 2 drives to even get into field goal range as Seattle ended the misery with their own field goal on their second OT drive. Seattle was not impressive as Wilson passed for only 123 yards and Lynch started fumbling for this year. The game was brutal to watch.

2) 09/29/13 - (11/10) New England (+2.0) AT (10/13) Atlanta (-2.0)
Selection:  (11/10) New England Patriots (+2.0)
Winner:  (11/10) New England Patriots (+2.0) by 7

As this game ended with the score 30-23 one may have thought the game was close. It wasn't. The game was over for all intents and purposes when New England's brilliant young defender Joe Vellano, filling in for injured Vince Wilfork, sacked Ryan for a 13 yard loss forcing a punt leading to Blount's beautiful 47 yard run/TD making it 20-10 New England. In the 3rd quarter, Aaron Dobson was being tackled and getting his head taken off (simultaneously) by a couple of Falcons however none of the officials had their eye on the ball (apparently) as neither penalty was called.  With the score 30-13 and 6 minutes left Julio Jones failed to secure the ball before dropping it however when Belichick challenged the officials said they did not have a replay to watch. It was clear on the replay I watched nevertheless it extended that Atlanta drive that led to a touchdown and a recovered on side kick that led to a FG. Lastly, with 2 minutes left and New England running out the clock at the Atlanta 37 a QB sneak on 2nd down and a hand-off on 3rd down both gained the required yard but the ball was placed about an inch short despite a challenge that clearly showed the necessary forward progress so Atlanta got the ball back, hence the "close" ending. Officiating seems a big cause for concern this year and will be addressed in a supplement however this game could have easily ended 41-16 as predicted (40+ points for the Patriots). Everything seems to be coming together for New England as they approach some of the tougher games on their schedule and they may just end 16-0 as we predicted in August, something we haven't done since August 2007.

Tertiary Selection(s)

3) 09/30/13 - (12/5) Miami (+6.5) AT (5/14) New Orleans (-6.5)
Selection:  (12/5) Miami Dolphins (+6.5)
Winner:  (5/14) New Orleans Saints (-6.5) by 21

The not-ready-for-prime-time Dolphins got a reality check Monday night in the Big Easy as Drew Brees had his way with them completing 30 of 39 passes for over 400 yards, 4 TDs and 0 picks for a 144.5 passer rating. The scary thing is Brees wasn't as sharp as he can be. The Dolphins looked to be making a game of it early when a 2nd quarter TD brought them to down 14-10 however 21 unanswered subsequent points put the game away for the Saints. The Dolphins do have a good young team but do not seem ready to challenge the elite teams as their 3 game winning streak and undeafeated outside the AFC East run ended unceremoniously. New Orleans went to 4-0 and are now 3 games up in the NFC South.

3) 09/29/13 - (33/20) New York (+3.5) AT (10/19) Tennessee (-3.5)
Selection:  (33/20) New York Jets (+3.5)
Winner:  (10/19) Tennessee Titans (-3.5) by 25

Geno Smith continued his play well one game and poorly the next routine throwing 2 int's and fumbling twice (once in the end zone - ouch!) as the Jets got clobbered by the Titans in Nashville. The Jets also lost for the first time this year outside on the AFC East. Jake Locker was having a great game for Tennessee throwing 3 TD's no picks and recording a passer rating of 130 until he was injured and Ryan (that's not good) Fitzpatrick took over and surprisingly did not get picked off but did throw a 77 yard TD! (wiping out the back judge in the process). Notwithstanding, after a very promising start and a stout defense the Titans may have lost a chance at a wild card by the time Locker gets back from his sprained hip.

3) 09/29/13 - (4/5) Dallas (-2.0) AT (21/20) San Diego (+2.0)
Selection:  (21/20) San Diego Chargers (+2.0)
Winner:  (21/20) San Diego Chargers (+2.0) by 9

We ran the table from here as the balance of our selections won. Philip Rivers continued his renaissance passing for over 400 yards and recording a passer rating of 124.3 despite throwing his 2nd Int of the season while Tony Romo had a sub-par game.  The Cowboys scored all of their points 21 points in the 2nd quarter going in at the half up 21-13 but Rivers came on in the 2nd half and Romo did not and that was the difference. The addition of former Tom Brady security blanket Danny Woodhead has really rounded out Rivers' passing attack and helped him get his Mojo back.  Dallas is still a game up in the struggling NFC East meanwhile San Diego probably will not catch Denver in the AFC West any time soon but may end up in contention for a wildcard if they continue to play this well.

3) 09/29/13 - (13/10) Minnesota (+3.0) AT (4/6) Pittsburgh (-3.0)
Selection:  (13/10) Minnesota Vikings (+3.0)
Winner:  (13/10) Minnesota Vikings (+3.0) by 7

Minnesota finally started Brady's other former understudy, Matt Cassel, acquired in the off season and signed for more money, and more guaranteed money, than the "starter" Ponder, for the first time this year and, not surprisingly, also won for the first time this year in London, England of all places. Cassel was able to hit free agent Greg Jennings for 2 TD's, including a very nice 70 yarder, and 6 other Minnesota's other targets while Adrian Peterson ran 23 times for 140 yards as the Vikings took a 34-17 lead into the 4th quarter and cruised home to victory. Interestingly, Cassel's passer rating of 123.4 exceeded any recorded by Ponder over his entire three seasons, including his lone "big game" at the end of last season, as well as Brian Hoyer's 103.9 rating in Cleveland on Sunday. Cassel has a lot more experience as a starter than Hoyer therefore Brian has the bigger upside at this point.  They are both too good to be sitting on the bench. Big Ben could be another story. Sacked 5 times, Ben also tossed an interception and lost a fumble as the Steelers remained winless, dropping to 0-4. Adrian Peterson is pretty special but Cassel started rusty against a pretty good Steeler's defense and outperformed Ben by a clear margin. Time is running out for Pittsburgh if they want to return to the post season after missing it last year.

Other Selections

09/29/13 - (13/10) Chicago (+3.0) AT (4/6) Detroit (-3.0)
Selection:  (4/6) Detroit Lions (-3.0)
Winner:  (4/6) Detroit Lions (-3.0 ) by 8
As expected Chicago played a good team that is playing well and lost handily. Cutler fumbled for a Detroit TD and threw 3 interceptions, one of which was run back to the Bear's 2. Stafford got in on the giveaway game as well, but not to the extent of Cutler, losing a fumble and throwing 1 pick and Reggie Bush seems to have finally found the blocking and rushed for over 100 yards once more. Detroit was up 37-16 going into the 4th quarter in another game where the final score was a lot closer than the game was.

09/29/13 - (1/4) Indianapolis (-8.0) AT (3/1) Jacksonville (+8.0)
Selection:  (1/4) Indianapolis Colts (-8.0)
Winner:  (1/4) Indianapolis Colts (-8.0) by 34

Jacksonville scored a whopping 3 points in a laugher. 25 cents on the dollar was a gift indeed.

09/29/13 - (33/20) New York (+4.0) AT (10/19) Kansas City (-4.0)
Selection:  (10/19) Kansas City Chiefs (-4.0)
Winner:  (10/19) Kansas City Chiefs (-4.0) by 24

The Chiefs handled a Giant team that has done little right all year very easily. Manning was sacked another 3 times and added a pick to his league leading total while Alex Smith threw his first 2 interceptions of the year. The New York defense did little else. The GMen really have their work cut out but have some soft opposition on the horizon while KC could pick up a couple of more wins before their schedule toughens up.

Longshot Selections

09/29/13 - (13/20) Baltimore (-3.0) AT (13/10) Buffalo (+3.0)
Selection:  (13/10) Buffalo Bills (+3.0)
Winner:  (13/10) Buffalo Bills (+3.0) by 3

Our lone longshot of the day came through as the Bills hung on to beat the Ravens at home despite several questionable calls by the officials. Flacco hit Torrey Smith 5 times for 166 yards but he also threw 5 interceptions. The Bills very good defense won the game for EJ Manuel, who completed 10 passes to Buffalo players and 2 passes to Baltimore players, helped out by a solid running game from Jackson and Spiller who were both close to 100 yards rushing. The Bills remain undefeated outside the AFC East along with New England.
