31/20 Philadelphia Eagles (+3.5) @ 4/7 Carolina Panthers (-3.5)
The Philadelphia Eagles are the most talented team in the NFC and they are playing the best football in the NFC. Cam Newman is a mediocre Quarterback with a career Passer Rating in the mid 80’s, but in 2015, the NFL somehow managed to use a soft Panther’s schedule to manufacture him into the League MVP. Who can say why?
Two weeks ago in Foxborough, the Patriots experienced unprecedented breakdowns in the Defensive Secondary, leaving Wide Receivers wide open and allowing Carolina to lead by 14 points in Q4. Tom Brady did what Tom Brady does and tied the game. The Patriots Defence had regrouped by this point and drove Newman backwards to 4th and 18 with 2:23 remaining. Instead of getting the ball back, a late flag 40 yards away from the play was thrown on Stephon Gilmore by the Field Judge The FJ was too far away from the play and out of position to see if there was any accrual contact. He called the penalty because Funchess snapped his head back a little bit.
The last time the two teams had met, the opposite happened when Rob Gronkowski was held in the end zone while the ball was in the air. The flag thrown was picked up. Newman now is 2-0 against Brady, all of it orchestrated by the Officials. These things could be written off to human error, but what happened in Detroit this Sunday is what really scares us. On Carolina’s first touchdown, there was an ineligible receiver downfield. Here is the play:
You can see the line of scrimmage at the six and the Offensive Lineman indicated by the black arrow at the three
As this was a scoring play, the Lions were not able to challenge. The fact that it was reviewed and allowed to stand indicates that the NFL itself is not enforcing the rules against the Panthers. The 31/20 Eagles are absolutely the play here, but if the NFL has predetermined that the Panthers are winning, we cannot advise betting on Philadelphia.
